"Love is, as far as I can tell, the most mature response to any situation - the pinnacle of what it means to be truly human. Love is a wrench in the wheels of cause and effect, of reactionary living, of casual imitation. Yes, speed and events are all around us in the information age, but motion, true motion, is rare. Love is the movement." - Jon Foreman

Our Church

Posted by Ryan Fowler Friday, November 24, 2006

Emily and I are joined together with a beautiful group of people who make up our house church. We meet each Sunday, rotating throughout our homes in downtown and midtown Memphis. We also spend time together at various times during the week to encourage and support each other.

Our purpose in being a part of this church is to reflect the image of Christ in our communities. In that pursuit, we desire to embody a spirit of reconciliation (people being reconciled with God and a diversity of people being reconciled with each other). We also seek to promote the shalom of God (peace and wholeness) in all the things that we do, as we believe that God cares for the whole person (the physical and the spiritual).
Our desire is to be in pursuit of the Kingdom that is to come as well as
the Kingdom that lies before us today (Mt. 6:10).

We meet in homes, as was described in the Christian scriptures (Romans 16:5, 1 Cor. 16:19, Col. 4:15, Philemon 1:2) as a way to encourage one another and to worship our Creator. Not being burdened with the financial responsibility of maintaining a facility or a church staff allows us to focus our funds and energy in ways that are directly beneficial to the community. Our homes also allow us to join together in intimate fellowship with each other.

Here are some of our basic beliefs:

· In God’s Kingdom, all people, beyond distinction, are united in a community of worship to God.(Rev. 7:9-17)

· God calls His people to care for the poor. (Mt. 25:31-46, Dt. 15:7-8, 1 Jn. 3:16-18)

· We are invited to engage in the mission of God – to be and make new disciples. (Mt. 28:16-20)

· Genuine, spirit-filled community is God’s way of proclaiming his presence among us. (Gal. 5:22-25, Rom. 12:9-13, Phil. 12:1-11, Eph. 3:14-16)

· Salvation is fully experienced in the wholeness of God’s shalom. (Eph. 2:14-16)
